His great passion is also Estonian rural architecture. He was one of the founders of the Estonian Open Air Museum and an active advocate for the preservation of rural architecture in Lahemaa National Park.
His work at the Scientific Restoration Workshop and in the team preparing the protection zone for Tallinn’s Old Town became a stepping stone for him to establish the Republican Inspectorate for the Protection of Architectural Monuments and to become a leading figure in Estonia’s heritage conservation. He was responsible not only for the protection of Estonia’s historical monuments but also for international cooperation in this field.
The book “Minu sajand. Muinsuskaitsja Fredi Tomps” is a multi-layered and personal account by Fredi Tomps about the preservation of Estonia’s heritage and its guardians, the achievements and challenges faced, and the significance of cultural heritage for individuals and society as a whole.
