Fredi Tomps (born 1928) is Estonia’s most experienced heritage conservationist and architect. His journey in the field of cultural heritage preservation began in the spring of 1948 when, together with fellow architecture students, he helped clear the ruins of St. Nicholas Church (Niguliste), which had been destroyed during the war.

Fredi Tomps is one of the few people who witnessed pre-war Narva, and the fate of this city largely shaped his career in heritage conservation.

Description

His great passion is also Estonian rural architecture. He was one of the founders of the Estonian Open Air Museum and an active advocate for the preservation of rural architecture in Lahemaa National Park.
His work at the Scientific Restoration Workshop and in the team preparing the protection zone for Tallinn’s Old Town became a stepping stone for him to establish the Republican Inspectorate for the Protection of Architectural Monuments and to become a leading figure in Estonia’s heritage conservation. He was responsible not only for the protection of Estonia’s historical monuments but also for international cooperation in this field.

The book “Minu sajand. Muinsuskaitsja Fredi Tomps” is a multi-layered and personal account by Fredi Tomps about the preservation of Estonia’s heritage and its guardians, the achievements and challenges faced, and the significance of cultural heritage for individuals and society as a whole.
